AMAPerú

AMAPerú

AMAPerú is a nonprofit organization based on social assistance for improving health and education in Peru.

Its mission is to Help, Motivate, and Learn. Its goal is to give volunteers the opportunity to help the impoverished communities of our country. Also, its volunteers are given the chance to become a part of a new culture while lending a hand to different cities in Peru. They want their volunteers to learn about Peruvian culture and fall in love with Peru and its diverse traditions, landscapes, cuisines and  people.

PROGRAMS:

  • Teaching English
This program allows children, adolescents and adults in underserved communities the opportunity to gain basic English skills that can help them for their future education and employment. English is a global language that is almost essential to learn. We want to help those institutions that lack the resources necessary for teaching English . This program will give the chance to many people who do not have the opportunity to study at a private institution and improve the future education in Peru.

Volunteers are given a lesson plan that can be modified to their ability. Our goal is for the participants to gain a basic level skills to read and speak English. One of the most important elements is pronunciation .

It is not required for volunteers to have teaching experience before participating in this program. Spanish proficiency is not required by AMAPeru, but it is recommended. Many volunteers find that any level of Spanish comprehension will enhance interactions with students and teaching staff.

If you are currently thinking about or studying within a educational career, this program is perfect for you!

  • Clinical Life
Clinical Life is a program designed for students in the fields of pre-medicine, medicine, nursing, dental, psychology, nutrition, public health, along with many other major studies that fall into any human health category. Volunteers work closely with professionals in these careers and are placed according to their experience, previous studies and information provided in the application. Worksites are located in different health centers and hospitals in Trujillo and its districts which have and have had contracts with AMAPERU for a few years.

This program provides a minimum of 4 hours of volunteering per day and depending on the desire of the volunteer, more time can be assigned. As a volunteer, you will be guided by a health professional at all times who will teach you and who you will support in activities and procedures.

The Clinical Life program provides 2 days of basic medical class in the afternoons in order to better understand the health system of Peru and its prevalent pathologies in the community. The knowledge and skills you learn will help you in your every day volunteering experiences. Volunteers have various classes, some include: classes on vaccination and injections, evaluation of a pregnant patient, childbirth, common diseases, and suturing, all of which will be directed by a registered nurse, midwife or physician. These classes should help volunteers develop broader knowledge of health care practices and thus having the opportunity to collaborate in different processes accompanied by a professional who will be monitoring and assessing. These classes are important in preparing volunteers for the final activity of this program which is the medical campaign where AMAPERU provides attention to over 100 people from different communities.

If you are currently thinking about or studying within a health career, this program is perfect for you!

  • Social work

This program focuses on the well being of children and adolescents in Peru. Peru has a high number of impoverished families and this highly affects their children. Many of these children are sent out to work at a young age in order to support their large families. Unfortunately, many of these children end up not attending school which results in the cycle repeating itself, leaving them in poverty.

Our mission is to help get these children off the streets by providing a safe place where they can do activities. Some of our activities include the formation of basketball teams, life workshops and working with children in shelters. We want to encourage and motivate these children and adolescents by letting them know they can succeed!

  • Veterinary Science
Veterinary science is a program for students and professionals of the veterinary career and those associated, or for people who love animals and have the passion and desire for their wellness. Volunteers will work 4 hours per day with Dr. Villena, a member of our staff, who will guide and teach you in the procedures and treatments offered to the animals in his clinic. Volunteers may also have the opportunity to make some home visits for special treatments. This work is carried out 3 days a week and volunteers can perform additional hours with prior coordination.

The Veterinary science program collaborates with communities in Trujillo and those surrounding it. In this program, volunteers will be going out one day per week with Dr. Kelly, a member of our staff, to provide vaccinations, antiparasitics, anti-fleas, ticks control, contraceptives, ampoules and vitamins for dogs and cats of these communities. Generally, the clinic will provide services to a different community every week which the volunteers will get to experience. Another activity included in this volunteer program is where one day a week in the afternoons, volunteers may go to a dog shelter called “Temporary Homes United” (Hogares Temporales Unidos), where they have been working to help in their feeding, cleaning, implementation, care, medical treatment and recreation of the dogs that are living there.

One day per week volunteers will go to a zoo where they will help in the cleaning and feeding of the animals. This zoo has more than 40 kinds of animals and is an incredible experience. The final activity of this program consists is a medical campaign to provide vaccines, medicines and treatments to pets in need.

If your passion is animals and you want to learn more about different types of animals and treatments, that in many cases you will only find in Peru, this program is for you!
